Mopping up some of the press coverage of Devon closures from last week:
I wish to object strongly to the proposed closure of Buckland Brewer Post Office. It is less than 18 months since Post Office Ltd put in a the Post Office in our newly refurbished Village Stores. It makes no sense now to close this facility. It is also absurd to keep Monkleigh Posdt Office open. The post office is 2/3 miles from BB and is only open three mornings a week. There is no shop with this post office and the premises are in a private hose and frankly is not even as big as the average sitting room.
The provision of an outreach van for such a limited time is a very poor substitute for we have – an excellent shop with a good post office facility.
As to villagers using Abbotsham instead….how are some of our older folk to get there. There is no bus service and the only way for many elderly people to get there is by taxi or a neighbour.
I think it is common knowledge that the people who run Abbotsham wish to give up the post office.
I suspect that might be true of the Monkleigh PO. The pub there is shut and waiting to be sold and the only shop which used to be housed in the car park behind the pub is also closed.
I only hope that Post Office Ltd is going into the consultation process with sincerity and integrity and that they will listen to reasoned arguments and judge the matter fairly.
